Steel and concrete: a new phase at the construction site
The PERGENOVA construction site has just experienced a few crucial weeks: a new phase in the construction of the bridge has begun.
The pouring of the concrete casting for the first foundation, that of Pier 9, inaugurated the phase on June 25. A few days later on July 1, the first steel blocks arrived to Genoa from Castellammare di Stabia. The nine blocks, which can weigh up to 50 tonnes, have arrived at the mouth of the Polcevera River on a barge. After their unloading, they were transferred during the night between Wednesday and Thursday.
In the meantime, work on the foundations of the piers continue: the piles of Piers 2, 3 and 7 have been driven into the ground; work began on the plinths of Piers 4, 6 and 11; while the plinth of Pier 5 has been built as well as that for Pier 9.
In the coming days, the work on eastern side will be focused on the plinth of Pier 11 and Pier 10. On the western side, work will conclude on the plinths of Piers 4 and 6; Pier 5 will begin to be raised; the underpinnings set for Pier 8, meaning that all the piles available in the area are being completed.
After months of work on the underpinnings, the raising of the piers will soon start changing the Val Polcevera skyline.
